ABOUT THE SHOW: Sons of a desert-dwelling alcoholic and a suburban wanderer have chosen extremely different lives. Their sibling rivalry violently erupts as they compete for the attention of a Hollywood producer, each trying to sell him a story for a new motion picture. Unsettling and intense, this American Classic tackles identity, family and self-doubt. Written by Sam Shepard Directed by Brian Niece On Our Studio Stage • March 15 - 31, 2019
SEEKING: Austin — (late 20s-early 40s) An Ivy League graduate who now works as a screenwriter in Northern California, where he lives with his wife and young children. He’s staying at his mother’s house in southern California while she’s on a trip to Alaska. He appears to be very successful, and yet there is something of his older brother in him, too. (May also be cast as female).
Lee — (early 30s-mid 40s) Austin’s older brother who who scrapes by through petty thievery and is prone to vanishing for long stretches of time. He mostly likes to drink, so he hasn’t found quite the same success as Austin. He’s also staying at his mother’s house, but not to focus on any kind of work, other than stealing from the neighbors. He appears to be a charasmatic loser, and yet there is something of his younger brother in him, too. (May also be cast as female).
Saul — (30s-60s) A smooth-talking Hollywood producer with a penchant for gambling. He’s always looking for the next big hit, so he can make big money.
Mom — (late 40s-60s) The mother of Austin and Lee, meek and somewhat delusional. Something has happened to her in her life that has left her powerless and absent.
