Created in 2016 and inspired by new play development programs across the country, New Voices aims to develop the next wave American voices right here in Jacksonville. Playwrights are selected through a blind submission process by national panel to embark on a yearlong developmental journey. These aspiring or established writers are paired with mentors who help guide the process from conception to final draft, culminating in a fully mounted production of their new play.
The birth of New Voices has paved the way for writers across four counties (Duval, St. Johns, Clay & Nassau) to emerge and apply to have their work selected, workshopped, developed, and produced.
The yearlong process serves as a roadmap for playwrights and dramaturgs. With incremental deadlines, playwrights have a clear track from conception to production. After selection, playwrights work with their dramaturgs through development and workshop sessions. Once a draft is ready to be read aloud, a private reading is held - highlighting areas for re-writes. Once another draft is ready, a public reading is held for feedback - leading the process into auditions, rehearsals and the fully-mounted production.
