Synopsis
Is any figure in American society more vilified than the welfare mother with multiple children by different fathers? In the Blood explodes stereotypes with a powerful portrait of Hester, an illiterate mother of five, who lives with her kids on the cruel streets of the inner city. We see her fierce love for her brood, her sacrifices for them and the joy they give her. The children, Jabber, Bully, Trouble, Beauty and Baby are played by adults who also double as key characters in Hester’s life. We see how she is exploited and abused; we also see how her own self-destructive decisions hold her back. Intensely thought-provoking and moving.
